JCPenney to Shut Down Stores in Seven States Ahead of Memorial Day — Here's the Complete List of Locations
JCPenney Store Closings: 7 More to Close by May 25 — See Full List by State
With Memorial Day weekend almost here, the clock is ticking for JCPenney shoppers as the retailer prepares to shutter seven stores nationwide. First, the May 25, 2025 closures will impact stores in seven states.
May 2025 JCPenney Store Closures
The closures come after the company said in February it planned to close eight stores, an announcement that in turn marked a change from the number of closures revealed in January, a company spokesperson said. A new lease extension running through August 31, 2025, with a potential long-term lease in the works, kept one spot—Westfield Annapolis Mall in Annapolis, Maryland—open.
A JCPenney spokesperson revealed to The Independent:
“We are thrilled to announce that we have reached a lease extension... and are in ongoing discussions with our landlord about a new long-term lease.
Consequently, a store closing event planned for Annapolis has been scrapped.
Though the store closures are recent, a JCPenney representative told KENS 5 these are "isolated" and the company "has no plans to significantly decrease our store count" nationwide.

Are the Closures Related to JCPenney’s Merger?
The company confirmed that the closures are not related to its recent merger with SPARC Group, the parent company of Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand, and Nautica. The merger led to the formation of Catalyst Brands, a new retail group headed by former JCPenney CEO Marc Rosen.
“Together, we bring scale, expertise and broad appeal to customers across America,” Rosen said. “We will leverage our resources and best-in-class industry talent to grow our brands further.”
A Look Back: JCPenney’s Bankruptcy and Retail Challenges
JCPenney has faced its share of financial challenges in recent years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, restructuring debt and initiating store closures as part of its Plan for Renewal.
“We look forward to emerging... as a stronger retailer,” former CEO Jill Soltau said at the time.
JCPenney Closures Reflect Broader Retail Trends in 2025
JCPenney is not alone. Other major retailers have also announced store closures:
-
Big Lots closed over 300 stores in 2024 after a $205 million drop in sales.
-
Party City shut down all U.S. locations in December 2024 after 40 years in business.
-
According to Coresight Research, U.S. store closures in 2024 hit 7,325, the highest since 2020. Projections estimate as many as 15,000 store closures in 2025.
Final Thoughts
While JCPenney reassures customers that the current closures are isolated, the overall retail landscape continues to shift. Shoppers in affected areas should visit soon before their local stores close for good.
